Part of the Pilardi collector selection, this Khatam chess and backgammon set highlights the precision of traditional geometric marquetry through a darker and more dramatic visual language.

The chess side features a structured black and gold playing surface, framed by repeated Khatam patterns and fine decorative borders. The backgammon side reveals a richer composition in red, black, and gold, with pointed fields, layered borders, and geometric detail.

This contrast between the two sides gives the piece a stronger sense of discovery: calm and architectural when closed, deeper and more ornate when opened.

Craftsmanship

The board is made using Khatam marquetry, a traditional inlay technique based on the assembly of very small geometric elements. Wood, bone, and brass are arranged by hand to create repeated star and geometric patterns across the surface.

Its three-tone composition requires careful visual balance: black and gold on the chess side, then red, black, and gold on the backgammon side. This richer contrast gives the board a more graphic and elaborate identity within the Pilardi collection.

The reversible format offers two playable surfaces: a chess board on one side and a backgammon board on the other. A clear protective resin finish enhances the contrast and luminosity of the marquetry while helping protect the surface over time.
